What does the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) do?

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.

The SAP must conduct an in-person evaluation, send required reports to the employer’s Designated Employee Representative (DER), monitor the employee(s) through education or treatment and conduct a follow up evaluation.

Why would someone need an SAP evaluation?

Employees in the transportation industry who violate a Department of Transportation (DOT) drug or alcohol regulation must immediately be removed from safety sensitive functions and complete the SAP return-to-duty process before they can be considered for return to duty to a DOT safety sensitive position.

Who can be a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)?

A Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) must have specific credentials, possess knowledge in specified content area, complete a comprehensive SAP training, pass a SAP exam and participate in continuing education.
